What is OpenClaw?
OpenClaw is an open-source autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) personal assistant software that runs locally on user devices and integrates with messaging platforms.
Built by developer Peter Steinberger, OpenClaw acts as a local message router and agent runtime, giving AI models "hands (or claws)" to run commands and manipulate files on your computer.
Important: OpenClaw is not a new AI model itself - it uses preexisting AI models (Claude, GPT, DeepSeek, etc.) as its "brain" while providing the infrastructure for these models to autonomously perform tasks across your digital life.
OpenClaw Timeline: From Clawdbot to OpenClaw
OpenClaw has undergone rapid evolution and multiple rebrands in its short history:
OpenClaw Platform Statistics
Despite being only a few months old, OpenClaw has achieved remarkable adoption in the developer and AI agent community:
OpenClaw achieved over 100,000 GitHub stars within just 2 months of release, making it one of the fastest-growing open-source AI projects in history.

- Opus 4.5: Most capable with "effort parameter" for adjustable thoroughness
- Sonnet 4.5: Strongest coding/agent performance, 1M token context window (beta)
- Haiku 4.5: Fastest responses, cost-efficient for high-volume use
OpenAI GPT Series:
- GPT-5 - Latest flagship model with state-of-the-art performance
- GPT-5.3-Codex (released Feb 5, 2026) - Most capable agentic coding model
- First self-developing model (helped build itself)
- 25% faster than GPT-5.2-Codex
- Advanced coding and reasoning capabilities
Chinese AI Models:
- Kimi K2.5 (Moonshot AI, Jan 2026) - 1 trillion parameter MoE model, 32B active parameters with multimodal capabilities
- GLM 4.7 (Zhipu AI, Jan 2026) - Improved coding abilities with open-source weights on Hugging Face
- MiniMax M2.1 (Shanghai, Jan 2026) - Industry-leading multi-language coding (Java, Rust, Golang)
- DeepSeek series - Chinese-developed models with custom configurations
Local Models (via Ollama Integration)
OpenClaw integrates with Ollama (announced Feb 1, 2026) using command: ollama launch openclaw
Requirements: Models with ≥64,000 token context length
Recommended Models:
- qwen3-coder - Qwen series coding specialist
- glm-4.7 and glm-4.7-flash - Zhipu AI's open models
- gpt-oss:20b and gpt-oss:120b - Open-source GPT variants
- kimi-k2.5 - Local deployment of Moonshot's flagship
OpenRouter Integration
- Built-in OpenRouter support with Auto Model (
openrouter/openrouter/auto) - Automatically selects most cost-effective model based on prompt complexity
- Routes simple tasks to cheaper models, complex tasks to capable models
Security Vulnerabilities & Known Issues
OpenClaw has faced significant security scrutiny since its release. Multiple critical vulnerabilities and security concerns have been identified:
CVE-2026-25253: Critical Remote Code Execution
- CVSS Score: 8.8 (Critical)
- Vulnerability: One-click remote code execution via cross-site WebSocket hijacking
- Issue: OpenClaw server doesn't validate WebSocket origin header
- Status: Patched in version 2026.1.29
Multiple Security Advisories
Three high-impact security advisories were issued in just 3 days:
- One-click RCE vulnerability
- Two command injection vulnerabilities
Malicious Skills & Supply Chain Concerns
- 341 malicious skills identified on ClawHub repository
- Some skills facilitate active data exfiltration
- Significant supply chain security concerns
Exposure Scale
- 21,639 exposed OpenClaw instances worldwide (as of Jan 31, 2026)
- Many instances misconfigured or publicly accessible
Industry Warnings
- npm founding CTO called it a "security dumpster fire"
- Cisco: "security nightmare"
- Palo Alto Networks: "potential biggest insider threat of 2026"
Inherent Security Risks
- Requires broad permissions to function effectively
- Can access email accounts, calendars, messaging platforms, and other sensitive services
- Misconfigured or exposed instances present serious security and privacy risks
- Heavy scrutiny from cybersecurity researchers and technology journalists
Recommendation: Users should carefully evaluate security implications before deploying OpenClaw, ensure instances are not publicly exposed, regularly update to latest versions, and audit installed skills for malicious behavior.
Technical Architecture
Understanding how OpenClaw works under the hood:
- Not a new AI model: OpenClaw uses preexisting AI models as its "brain"
- Built on Node.js: Acts as local message router and agent runtime
- Model-agnostic: Bring your own API keys or run local models
- Privacy-focused: All processing happens locally on your device
- Open-source software: Gives AI models "hands (or claws)" to run commands and manipulate files
- Free software: Users only pay for costs of running the underlying language model
